Worst. Customer Service. Ever!

Standard

So after graduating college, one would hope that the customer service nightmare would be over. A promising career in the works along with a newly found confidence to match, but what if you have yet to find that dream job? How many more part time jobs will you have to endure until saying good riddance to the badges that bound you? The timing is uncertain, as we have to worry about the cost of living whilst using all the spare time we have to find job opportunities. Unfortunately, we may be stuck in the cycle of catering to the needs of unruly customers. Coping with the idea of feeling over qualified tends to take its toll on our health, physically and mentally. Having to bite your tongue at customers who project their anger on to you is exhausting. Being undermined and treated like a lower being can ultimately alter one’s self-esteem. Recently I had the most unsavory customer encounter. This woman seemed kind enough at first, there were no issue to speak of. I did all the formalities of repeating her order as it was placed online and handed her the purchase. It was all too apparent at that moment that there was an issue with her order by the anger in her eyes and the rant that surely followed. I calmly explained and showed her evidence of the purchase order receipt. She argued on and would not listen to reason. At that point I had heard enough. Not only was I not being rude as she proclaimed, but I also apologized and fixed her order. Even after that she asked to speak to a manager. As there was no manager working at the time, I had to get her on the phone. When the customer realized she would not be comped her purchase, she continued on about the customer always being right. I kept apologizing to avoid any further altercation. That just seemed to add more fuel to the fire. Needless to say, that by the end of the irrelevant conversation, I was seeing red. The thoughts that went through my mind were nothing more than of a violent nature. I had to talk myself down, however as I was listing the accomplishments I’ve achieve in life as a form of merit to be the better person, the anger arose. I could not grasp why I was still being exposed to this torture. As with anything in life, you have to take it in moderation and not dwell on the unchangeable. If you feel as if your time has expired at that go nowhere job, use it as motivation to be persistent on your job search. Remember to breath as you remove yourself from the situation. Nothing is worse than looking back and realizing that those people got to you. If you don’t matter to those customers, you shouldn’t let them matter to you. Advise I like to give to people that try to make someone feel incompetent, remember that the negative feedback only worsens the situation. If you just love bringing people down, see a therapist. They are paid to listen to your nonsense. Don’t take it out on unsuspecting customer service workers who already have a stressing job.
